Why 100 Mbps usually points to the local network

A wired connection stuck around 90 to 95 Mbps on speed tests often means the Ethernet link itself negotiated at 100 Mbps. That happens before your browser opens, before the speed test server is chosen and before your internet provider has much to say about it. The computer and router agreed on a slower wired link.

  • That is why 100 Mbps is such a useful number. Random congestion can create many different speeds. A weak Wi-Fi signal may bounce all over the place. But a wired connection that keeps landing just under 100 Mbps usually has a physical or hardware limit in the path.
  • The limit can be tiny: one damaged cable pair, one old 10/100 switch, one wall jack punched down badly, one USB adapter that only supports Fast Ethernet. The rest of your internet plan can be excellent and still get squeezed through that one weak part.

Check link speed before trusting any speed test

A speed test tells you how fast traffic moved during that test. Link speed tells you what the wired connection negotiated between devices. For this problem, link speed is the cleaner clue.

  • On Windows, open Settings, go to Network and Internet, choose Ethernet and look for link speed. You may also see it inside Control Panel under adapter status. On macOS, System Information can show Ethernet speed, and some adapters show it in Network settings. Router apps sometimes show port speed too.
  • If the link speed says 100 Mbps, stop testing websites for a moment. You have a local cap to find. If it says 1 Gbps or higher but speed tests are still slow, the issue may be software, router performance, provider speed, VPN, security filtering or the test server.

Ethernet cables are cheap, common and easy to damage. A chair leg rolls over one. A connector clip cracks. A cable gets bent sharply behind a desk. A wall plate cable was made quickly years ago and nobody thought about it again. The outside can look normal while the inside is not.

  • Gigabit Ethernet needs all four wire pairs. A cable with a bad pair may still connect at 100 Mbps, which is why the connection does not look fully broken. It looks capped. That half-working behavior is exactly what confuses people.
  • Use a short, known-good Cat5e or Cat6 cable directly from the computer to the router. Do not test through a wall jack, dock or switch yet. If the link jumps to 1 Gbps, the original cable or something in the old path is the problem.

Switches, wall jacks and docks can hide the cap

Many homes have more than one piece between the computer and router. The cable may run from a laptop dock to a wall jack, through in-wall wiring, into a small switch and then to the router. Any one part can force 100 Mbps.

  • Old switches are a common one. If a switch says 10/100 or Fast Ethernet, it cannot pass gigabit speeds no matter how good the cables are. A gigabit switch usually says 10/100/1000, Gigabit or 1G. The label is worth checking before buying anything else.
  • USB docks and adapters deserve the same suspicion. Some small adapters only support 100 Mbps. Others support gigabit but behave badly through certain USB hubs. Test the Ethernet adapter directly into the computer, then test another adapter if you have one.

If every other wired device gets gigabit and one computer stays at 100 Mbps, focus on that computer’s adapter, driver, port and cable. The router is less likely to be the main problem if the same router port works correctly with another device.

  • Check whether the adapter supports gigabit. Some older desktops and budget laptops have 100 Mbps ports. If the adapter supports gigabit, update the network driver and return speed and duplex settings to auto negotiation. Forced settings can create exactly the kind of mismatch that makes Ethernet behave poorly.
  • Also test with the laptop charger connected. It is less common, but some docks and power-saving setups behave differently on battery. If a USB-C dock is involved, try a different USB-C port and remove other high-power accessories during the test.

When the wall jack is the problem

Wall jacks make Ethernet look cleaner, but they add hidden work behind the plate. The in-wall cable has to be good, both ends have to be terminated correctly and the patch panel or keystone has to keep all pairs connected.

  • If direct computer-to-router Ethernet gives gigabit but the same computer through the wall jack gives 100 Mbps, the wall path is the suspect. Try another wall jack if the room has one. Test the patch cable on both ends. If you are comfortable removing the wall plate, check for loose or badly seated wires.
  • For renters or anyone not comfortable with wiring, this is a good point to stop and document the tests. You can say: direct cable to router is 1 Gbps, wall jack path is 100 Mbps. That is much clearer than saying the internet is slow.
